Jade & Bone
Jade and Bone is a collaboration between Pounamu Carver Clem Mellish and Master Carver Brian Flintoff. Clem is considered a local living treasure for his skill and passion for the art of pounamu (nephrite) carving while Brian is widely known for his role in the revival of Taonga Puoro (Māori Musical Wind Instruments). His work with bone is also highly prized as treasured heirloom pieces.
There were many unique aspects to this project and there was an enormous amount of content that we needed to display in a way that is simple and easy to navigate. Included on site is an entire book, images and content from two exhibitions, as well as an online shop. The challenge was to find an interactive way to display the book directly on-site that also works well on mobile device. We achieved this by breaking the book into chapters displayed on separate sections, linked by a contents menu. It was fun to embed music with each chapter, which of course isn’t possible with a conventional book. We kept the design very simple with natural colours associated with wood, bone and pounamu.
